There are many jobs in the computer and the internet field many of which don’t have formal schooling facilities.
Athough there are computer science departments at many universities, many people learn on their own, get an entry job at a corporation then move around from there to find what they’re good at and like to do.
Many jobs and job titles are fuzzy because most computer type jobs are like jack of all trades or troubleshooting. You do a bit of everything to solve the current problem.
For the purpose of your resume, try to define your skills and title as specifically as possible. Put down your formal education credentials but also list you do and what you’ve done skill by skill.
Some jobs are team player, some are solo.
Silicon Valley is the headquarters for the high tech computer industry. It is concentrated in several suburbs of San Francisco namely Palo Alto and San Jose. Before you go there, be forewarned that real estate prices are very high.
Technical skills can either be broken down into software, the stuff that runs the machines or hardware, the machines themselves. You usually specialize in one little area of one these categories.
You need either certification to show you can do this stuff or as with many programmers and code writers who are self-taught, you just tell them you can do this stuff, ask them for a problem and solve it right there for them.
On a PBS documentary, Netscape hired some 16 year old kid because he was solving people’s computer code problems over the internet. When they contacted him, they were surprised that he was this kid but they hired him anyway.
